The Ogun State police command has launched an investigation into the death of a student from Obada Idi-Emi High School in the Imeko Afon Local Government Area, identified only as Ariyo, who allegedly died after receiving corporal punishment from a teacher.
Activist Adetoun shared the story online, explaining that the teacher had purchased a dustbin for the classroom and asked students not to break it.
In response, Ariyo jokingly remarked, “Is it not our money that was used to buy it?” The teacher found this comment offensive and reported it to the principal, who allegedly instructed that the student be punished.
Following the principal’s directive, the teacher reportedly flogged Ariyo with 162 strokes of the cane. During the punishment, Ariyo began to vomit, collapsed, and hit his head on the floor.
According to the activist, the teachers left him unattended for a time before realizing he was unconscious. He was then rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Confirming the incident, Ogun State Police Command spokesperson Omolola Odutola stated that, contrary to reports, Ariyo was made to perform 162 frog jumps and received 24 strokes of the cane. She noted that an investigation is ongoing.
“The incident occurred on October 15, 2024. The deceased was instructed to do 162 frog jumps and was given 24 strokes of the cane.
He was taken to FMC Idi-Aba for medical care and passed away on October 25. His body has been transferred to the Ayetoro mortuary for an autopsy, and the investigation is continuing.”
