The Dutch coach was informed of his dismissal on the morning of October 28 by club officials, including chief executive Omar Berrada, sporting director Dan Ashworth, and technical director Jason Wilcox.
His departure comes after two and a half years at the helm, with his final match resulting in a Premier League defeat to West Ham United on Sunday.
This loss left Manchester United in 14th place in the league, seven points adrift of the Champions League spots, having secured only three wins in nine league games and four in 14 across all competitions.
In the interim, former striker Ruud van Nistelrooy, who was brought in during the offseason to assist Ten Hag, will take over management, while the rest of the coaching staff will remain in their positions for the time being.
A statement on Manchester United’s social media accounts confirmed Ten Hag’s departure, stating: “Erik ten Hag has left his role as Manchester United men’s first-team manager.
“Erik was appointed in April 2022 and led the club to two domestic trophies, winning the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024. We are grateful to Erik for everything he has done during his time with us and wish him well for the future.”
Despite an end-of-season review in the summer, where Ten Hag was retained following an eighth-place finish in the Premier League—United’s lowest position since 1990—he was given a one-year contract extension at the start of July. His original contract, signed in 2022, was set to expire in 2025.
