Hannatu Musa Musawa, the Minister of Arts, Culture, and Creative Economy, has addressed the controversy surrounding her appointment as a minister while still undergoing the mandatory one-year National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s ‘Sunday Politics,’ Musawa clarified that she did not break any laws by accepting the ministerial role while serving as a corps member.

When asked how she could become a minister without presenting an NYSC certificate—an essential requirement for public office—Musawa emphasized that she had fulfilled her NYSC obligations.

“There have been numerous accounts of this situation, but the fact that I’m here as a minister should indicate that I did nothing wrong,” she said.

Musawa mentioned that she had completed “two years” of national service in her lifetime and stated that she would eventually provide her version of the events.

Responding to whether she owed Nigerians an explanation, Musawa reaffirmed that she had done nothing illegal.

“I did not break the law. I completed NYSC,” she said, insisting that her actions were in full compliance with the law.

Musawa was appointed as a minister in August 2023 while still a corps member, and no questions about her NYSC status were raised during her Senate screening.
