More than 90 people have reportedly died, with over 50 others hospitalized, after a fuel-laden tanker crashed in Majiya village, Taura Local Government Area, Jigawa State, around 12:30 a.m. on Wednesday, October 16.
It’s believed that villagers were scooping fuel from the tanker when an explosion occurred.
Confirming the tragedy, DSP Lawal Shiisu Adams, spokesperson for the state police command, stated:
“Today (Wednesday), a petrol tanker traveling from Port Harcourt to Nguru in Yobe state reached Majiya village at around 12:30 a.m.
The driver lost control, causing the tanker to fall. Fuel from the tanker spilled into the gutters and drains, and villagers began collecting it. The fuel ignited, leading to the explosion.”
He added that 95 people had been confirmed dead, and 50 were receiving treatment in local hospitals.
