In an interview with Interview magazine on Wednesday, October 9, the 55-year-old singer expressed her excitement about being on her own, two years after marrying the 52-year-old actor.
Reflecting on her past experiences over the last 25 to 30 years, she mused, “What can I do when it’s just me flying solo… what if I’m just free?”
Lopez shared with Nikki Glaser that although this “new territory” can feel “lonely, unfamiliar, scary, sad, and desperate,” she emphasized that “being in a relationship doesn’t define” her.
“When you sit with those feelings and realize, ‘These things are not going to kill me,’ it’s like, ‘Actually, I can find joy and happiness all by myself,’” she remarked.
“I can’t seek happiness in others,” she continued. “I need to find happiness within myself.”
While acknowledging that she is a romantic who loves being in relationships and wants to grow old with someone, she noted, “We often think, ‘I need that to be whole and happy.’ But you don’t.”
Lopez was previously married to Ojani Noa, Cris Judd, and Marc Anthony before eloping with Affleck in Las Vegas in July 2022.
She humorously referred to her past self as a “dumb bitch” and a “motherf**ker” for desiring a partner.
Now, she believes that her relationship with herself is the “most important thing,” adding, “I think we tend to lose sight of that when we’re wrapped up with others.”
