Inquest Into Thomas Kingston’s Death To Investigate Medication’s Impact On His State Of Mind

The inquest into the death of Thomas Kingston, husband of Lady Gabriella Windsor, will explore whether his passing was related to the new medication he had been prescribed.

Thomas, 45, was found dead at his parents’ home in the Cotswolds on February 25, having died from a “traumatic head wound,” with a gun discovered nearby.

During a pre-inquest review at Gloucestershire Coroner’s Court on October 8, Martin Porter KC stated that the Kingston family had been informed of a potential connection between the medication Thomas was taking and his mental state prior to his death.

Mr. Porter emphasized that the inquiry should not be restricted to determining the direct cause of death, which is evident. He argued that the inquest should also consider “Mr. Kingston’s state of mind and whether that state of mind was influenced by the medication he had taken.” He noted, “The family has been advised that there could be a connection for your court to investigate.”

Katy Skerrett, the senior coroner for Gloucestershire, agreed that “the recent prescription should be part of the scope,” but cautioned that establishing a causal link would be a different matter.

Thomas’s parents were present at the hearing, and it was revealed that his father, Martin Kingston, would provide evidence on behalf of the family, while Lady Gabriella did not attend.

At a previous inquest in March, Ms. Skerrett detailed the circumstances surrounding Thomas’s death, stating, “Mr. Kingston was visiting his parents’ home in the Cotswolds. On February 25, 2024, he had lunch with his parents. His father then went out to walk the dogs. Upon his return, Mr. Kingston was missing, and after about 30 minutes, his mother went to look for him. His father forced entry into a locked-out building when there was no response and discovered Mr. Kingston deceased from a catastrophic head injury, with a gun present at the scene. Emergency services were called, and police determined that the death was not suspicious.”

Thomas was the son-in-law of Prince and Princess Michael of Kent. He proposed to Lady Gabriella in August 2018, and they married in May 2019.

Following his death, Lady Gabriella, 43, released a joint statement with Thomas’s parents, Martin and Jill, and his sisters, Joanna Connolly and Emma Murray.

The statement read: “It is with the deepest sorrow that we announce the death of Thomas Kingston, our beloved husband, son, and brother. Tom was an exceptional man who lit up the lives of all who knew him. His death has come as a great shock to the whole family, and we ask you to respect our privacy as we mourn his passing.”

Thomas’s funeral took place earlier this year at the Chapel Royal at St. James’s in London, followed by a reception at St. James’s Palace, attended by 140 guests, including his widow, family members, the Duke of Kent, Princess Alexandra, and the Prince of Wales. The service, lasting one hour, was led by the Sub-Dean of the Chapels Royal, the Revd Canon Paul Wright, with a sermon from the former Bishop of London, the Rt Revd Richard Chartres.

In June, a more intimate celebration of life was held at St. Mary Abbots Church in Kensington, attended by close friends and family, as well as several members of the royal family.

A spokesperson for the Kingston family stated, “Lady Gabriella and the Kingston family have been deeply touched by the outpouring of love, kindness, and support they have received over the past difficult months. They were grateful for the opportunity to celebrate and give thanks for the life of a wonderful man among so many who knew and loved him.”
