Angry residents of Agenebode, the headquarters of Etsako East Local Government Area in Edo State, have set fire to a police station following the kidnapping and subsequent killing of a young man.
A source, who spoke anonymously to Punch, reported that multiple individuals were killed, and vehicles at the police station were torched after accusations that suspected Fulani herdsmen were abducting people for organ harvesting and were being protected by the police.
“The incident that sparked the unrest involved a young man who had been kidnapped several weeks ago. Despite a ransom being paid, he was not released, and it was later discovered that he had been killed,” the source said.
“The youths in the community managed to trace the kidnapper’s phone and arrested the individual, who was handed over to the police. The trail led to the head of the Fulani community in the area.”
Dissatisfied with how the police were handling the case, the youths stormed the police station, seized the suspect, and took him to the house of the Fulani leader. After interrogation, the suspect allegedly confessed that numerous kidnapped victims had been killed and buried in shallow graves after their body parts were harvested.
Angry, the youths unearthed the decomposed body of the young man at the Fulani leader’s residence, who had fled with his family. During the process, they also discovered several human bones.
In their fury, the youths torched the building, followed by the business centers of several Hausa/Fulani youths, before proceeding to the police station, where they set it ablaze.
One of the youths declared, “Enough is enough. This must stop. The police are killing our children and still taking money from us. These kidnappers take our children, collect the ransom, and still kill them. They take N2.5 million, sometimes N3 million, and still kill the victims.”
The Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Zone 5, Arungwa Udo, and the Commissioner of Police, Nemi Edwin-Iwo, have visited the area to assess the situation and restore order.
