The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has dismissed claims that an acting Chief of Army Staff (COAS) has been appointed to temporarily replace Army Chief Taoreed Lagbaja.
In a statement issued on Monday, October 21, the DHQ clarified that Lagbaja is currently on his annual leave and is “hale and hearty.” Recent concerns had arisen regarding his wellbeing and whereabouts, with rumors of his death circulated online. The Nigerian Army had labeled these rumors as “fake news” on Sunday.
Some online sources had suggested that a senior officer had been appointed as acting COAS to fill any perceived leadership gap.
In response to these claims, the Director of Defence Information, Tukur Gusau, explained that Lagbaja is reviewing routine briefings from Chief of Policy and Plans, Major General Abdulsalam Bagudu Ibrahim, in line with standard military protocols. Gusau also warned against calls for a military takeover, stressing that such actions are treasonable under Nigerian law.
The statement reads:
“The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) wishes to clarify that no senior officer has been appointed as the acting Chief of Army Staff (COAS), contrary to speculation from certain media outlets. For the record, no such appointment exists within the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN).
Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, the Chief of Army Staff, is currently enjoying his well-earned rest as part of his 2024 annual leave. The AFN is functioning as professionally as ever, with all Service Chiefs performing their constitutional duties. Major General Abdulsalam Bagudu Ibrahim is handling routine briefings for the COAS in accordance with standard military procedures.
We urge individuals spreading false rumors to stop immediately. The COAS is in good health and will resume his duties at the end of his leave.
Additionally, anyone advocating for a military takeover, as seen in a viral video, should understand that such actions are treasonable under the Constitution.
The AFN is unwavering in its commitment to safeguarding and strengthening our democracy and remains loyal to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration. The military continues to focus on its primary responsibility: protecting the nation’s integrity.
The peace being enjoyed today is the direct result of the President’s support for the military and the dedication of AFN leadership.
In this regard, the AFN and relevant security agencies have been tasked with taking necessary action against any individuals or groups advocating unconstitutional changes in the country. The Chief of Defence Staff appreciates the support and prayers of Nigerians. Victory is assured.”
The DHQ also urged media organizations to verify information with the appropriate authorities before publishing false reports. The CDS had spoken with the COAS just minutes prior to the release of the statement.
