Diana was one of four siblings, including her older sisters, Lady Sarah McCorquodale and Lady Jane Fellowes, and her younger brother Charles, the 9th Earl Spencer, who oversees her childhood home, Althorp Estate in Northampton.
Prince Harry quietly traveled from the US to the UK to attend the funeral of his uncle, Lord Robert Fellowes, on August 28 in Snettisham, Norfolk. His brother, Prince William, also attended. Lord Fellowes, a former equerry, was married to Diana’s sister, Lady Jane.
According to PEOPLE magazine, Harry stayed at Althorp with his uncle Charles during his visit, where his mother Diana is also laid to rest. The funeral occurred just three days before the 27th anniversary of Diana’s death on August 31. Diana tragically died in a car accident in Paris in 1997 and was buried on a small island in the Oval Lake at Althorp.
The Spencer family has long supported William and Harry, including during their mother’s funeral when their uncle Charles delivered a moving eulogy. The Spencers have consistently been a source of support throughout the brothers’ lives.
Although no senior royals attended the service marking the tenth anniversary of Harry’s Invictus Games in May, his uncle Charles, aunt Lady Jane, and cousins George McCorquodale, Ned Spencer, and Louis Spencer, Viscount Althorp, were present. Harry’s close relationship with his aunts and uncles was also evident when he and William unveiled a statue of Diana in the gardens of Kensington Palace in July 2021 to honor what would have been her 60th birthday.
The Spencer family was also in attendance at Harry and Meghan’s royal wedding in 2018, with Lady Jane delivering a reading during the ceremony. Lady Sarah and Lady Jane were present at Prince Archie’s christening in Windsor in July 2019 and appeared in the official portrait commemorating the event.
Harry has even taken his wife, Meghan, to visit Charles at Althorp. In his memoir, “Spare,” released in January 2023, Harry recalled the poignant moment when he and Meghan visited his mother’s grave. He described how Uncle Charles helped them set off across the lake to the private island where Diana is buried, reflecting on the peacefulness of the place where his mother grew up.
