A 13-year-old boy has been arrested after launching a violent attack in a classroom with a hammer and knife, leaving a teenage girl in critical condition and several others injured.
The schoolboy, Roman G, slit a classmate’s throat and inflicted injuries on at least four people during the incident at a school in Chelyabinsk, Russia. The critically injured girl was rushed to the hospital and underwent emergency surgery.
According to reports, Roman G arrived at school dressed in black, initially heading toward the toilet before storming into a biology classroom. He began attacking students and a teacher with a hammer, then fled down the corridor.
It was reported that the suspect “came to school all in black in the middle of the first lesson, but did not go straight to the classroom, as he walked past and went towards the toilet.
“A few minutes later, he ran screaming into the classroom where the Biology lesson was taking place and started waving a hammer. First, he hit one of the girls on the head, then the teacher. After that, Roman hit another girl and a boy, ran out of the classroom and ran down the corridor.”
Roman G had posted a social media rant accusing Russian President Vladimir Putin of “enslaving the population” and “Nazism” hours before the attack. Investigators are working to determine the motive behind his actions.
Roman G was eventually detained by the National Guard and is being evaluated by a psychiatrist.
All those injured, including Biology teacher Nina Shoshina, who was wounded while trying to protect her students, were taken to the hospital. Shoshina described the attacker’s sudden and violent entry into the classroom and her efforts to stop him.
She said: “He was holding a gun and a hammer. He didn’t say anything, he just screamed. I immediately started screaming to stop him. I ran up to him, but the girls were a little faster.”
