Speaking at an economic forum in Vladivostok on September 4, Putin described it as the “sacred duty” of the Russian army to expel Ukrainian forces from the Kursk region and safeguard its citizens following a recent assault.
When asked about the U.S. election, Putin stated that while the final decision rests with the American people, Russia is backing Harris, the Democratic nominee. This statement comes shortly after the U.S. Justice, State, and Treasury departments announced sanctions and criminal charges against Russian government attempts to influence U.S. public opinion ahead of the November election.
“I mentioned earlier that our preferred candidate was the current president, Mr. Biden,” Putin said with a smirk. “He’s been removed from the race, but he advised his supporters to back Ms. Harris. So we will support her too,” he added, eliciting applause from the audience.
Putin also remarked on Harris’ “expressive and infectious laugh,” suggesting it signifies her well-being. He implied that if she is successful, she might be less likely to impose restrictive measures on Russia compared to her predecessor, Donald Trump, who introduced numerous sanctions.
Some viewers interpreted Putin’s remarks as sarcastic, noting that former President Trump is often seen as the Kremlin’s favored candidate due to his previous praise of Putin and promises to end the Ukraine conflict on Russia’s terms.
