Marie has been named one of the godparents for Prince Gustav and Princess Carina’s daughter, Princess Mafalda, who was born via surrogacy on April 26, 2024. The Danish palace confirmed this news on Saturday, sharing a photo of the proud parents with Mafalda and their son, Prince Gustav Albrecht.
Mafalda was baptized at Berleburg Castle in Germany, the ancestral home of the Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg royal family, to which Gustav belongs through his father, the late Prince Richard.
Alongside Marie, other godparents include Prince Philippos of Greece, Prince Philipp of Hesse, Hereditary Prince Christian-Kraft zu Hohenlohe-Oehringen, Hereditary Princess Kelly von Sachsen-Coburg and Gotha, and Baroness Helle Reedtz-Thott.
Another photo from the Danish palace showed Prince Gustav and Princess Carina with their daughter and five of Mafalda’s godparents, including Marie. For the occasion, Princess Marie looked elegant in a purple floral dress and silver heels, with her brunette hair neatly styled.
Prince Gustav, a cousin of King Frederik and Prince Joachim, is the son of their aunt, Princess Benedikte. His son, Gustav Abrecht, was also born via surrogacy in the United States, with Crown Prince Christian, the eldest child of Frederik and Queen Mary, serving as one of his godparents.
Gustav and Carina’s journey to marriage was complicated due to a stipulation in Gustav’s father’s will that threatened inheritance if he married someone who did not meet certain criteria.
Carina’s Swedish and Mexican heritage initially posed a challenge, but after resolving family disputes, Gustav and Carina were married with the support of the current Danish monarchs.
