A 39-year-old woman and her 19-year-old son have been arrested for allegedly murdering her husband and attempting to stage the crime as a robbery at their home in Maubane village, near Makapanstad, North West.
North West police spokesperson, Col Amanda Funani, confirmed the arrest of Refiloe Malekoa and her son, Goitsimang Madibela, on Monday, September 2. The pair are facing murder charges in connection with the death of 63-year-old Lucas Molekoa.
The incident occurred on Sunday, September 1, while Molekoa and his stepson, Goitsimang, were watching soccer.
An argument reportedly escalated into a physical fight, and when Refiloe’s attempt to intervene failed, she allegedly hit her husband over the head with an object as he overpowered her son, causing him to collapse. The mother and son then allegedly strangled Molekoa with a rope.
They later informed neighbors, falsely claiming their home had been robbed. Police, upon investigation, charged the two with murder.
The suspects appeared in the Moretele Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, September 4, for a bail hearing, which was postponed. They remain in custody, with the hearing set to continue on Friday, September 6.
