Miley Cyrus is being sued for alleged copyright infringement, with Tempo Music Investments claiming that her hit song “Flowers” copies aspects of Bruno Mars’ 2013 hit “When I Was Your Man.”
According to the lawsuit obtained by TMZ, Tempo Music argues that “Flowers” bears significant musical similarities to Mars’ track, including melody, harmony, and chord progressions.
The company, which holds a partial copyright for Mars’ song, contends that the similarities are so pronounced that Miley “intentionally copied” the hit. They also allege that certain lyrics in “Flowers” resemble those in Mars’ song.
Despite “Flowers” being a commercial success and winning a Grammy Award, Tempo Music asserts that the song’s existence is heavily influenced by “When I Was Your Man.”
The lawsuit states, “It is undeniable based on the combination and number of similarities between the two recordings that ‘Flowers’ would not exist without ‘When I Was Your Man.’”
Tempo Music is seeking financial damages and an injunction to prevent Miley from performing or distributing “Flowers.” Bruno Mars is not listed as a plaintiff in the case.
