Following the tradition set by Queen Elizabeth II in commemorating the anniversary of her own father, King George VI, no public events were held. Elizabeth II typically spent the day privately at Sandringham, reflecting on her father’s death on 6 February 1952 at the Norfolk estate.
Along with the social media tribute, King Charles and Queen Camilla privately honored the late Queen by attending an intimate church service at Crathie Kirk, near Balmoral. King Charles looked dignified in a black suit and white shirt, with a small pink flower pinned to his lapel.
Queen Camilla looked regal in a green jacket with red and green tartan lapels, paired with a green hat adorned with a feather. She smiled warmly at waiting photographers, holding her handbag on her lap.
This emotional anniversary comes just a day after the King and Queen attended the annual Braemar Highland Games in Scotland. Queen Elizabeth II, the UK’s longest-serving monarch, passed away peacefully at Balmoral, Aberdeenshire, on 8 September 2022, at the age of 96, after a 70-year reign. Her passing marked the moment her son, Charles, ascended the throne, with his coronation later held on 6 May 2023.
During his two-year reign, King Charles has already worked with three prime ministers and completed state visits to France, Germany, and Kenya. He has also hosted leaders from South Africa, South Korea, and the Japanese Emperor. Charles delivered his second King’s Speech at the State Opening of Parliament in July and celebrated his official birthday at Trooping the Colour in June.
In January, the King underwent a procedure for an enlarged prostate, and in February, Buckingham Palace confirmed he had been diagnosed with an undisclosed form of cancer.
After pausing his public appearances for treatment, Charles resumed some of his duties in April. This autumn, the King and Queen are expected to visit Australia and Samoa, where they will attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) 2024.
