The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed the targeted elimination of senior Hezbollah intelligence commander Hassan Khalil Yassin during a precision strike on Saturday, September 28, in the Dahieh district of Beirut.
According to the Jerusalem Post, Yassin played a crucial role in Hezbollah’s intelligence operations and was responsible for identifying civilian and military targets within Israeli territory.
“Yassin led a department focused on identifying civilian and military targets along the northern border and deep within Israeli territory,” the IDF stated. The military further noted that Yassin was significantly involved in planning terror attacks amid the ongoing conflict, with more attacks against Israeli civilians and soldiers in the pipeline.
This strike on Yassin follows heightened tensions between Israel and Hezbollah after the assassination of Hezbollah’s leader, Hassan Nasrallah. The IDF confirmed that Nasrallah was killed the day before in airstrikes targeting Hezbollah’s main headquarters in the southern suburbs of Beirut, a stronghold known as the Dahiyeh.
“Hassan Nasrallah will no longer be able to terrorize the world,” declared the IDF after confirming Nasrallah’s death. His underground headquarters, concealed beneath residential buildings, was hit during the airstrikes.
In retaliation for Nasrallah’s death, Lebanon launched an attack on Israeli territory, which triggered air raid sirens in areas near Jerusalem. The IDF reported on X (formerly Twitter): “Sirens sounded in the area of Jerusalem following a launch from Lebanon into Israeli territory.”
The airstrikes and significant eliminations have escalated tensions further, with protests erupting in Iran following Nasrallah’s death. Protesters carried images of the Hezbollah leader and shouted slogans calling for “revenge,” denouncing both Israel and the United States.
Lebanon has declared a three-day mourning period following Nasrallah’s assassination, while Iran has requested an urgent UN Security Council meeting to address the rapidly escalating conflict between Hezbollah and Israel.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the killing of Nasrallah as a “historic turning point,” asserting that Israel had “settled its account” with a mass murderer responsible for the deaths of numerous Israelis, Americans, and French citizens.
As violence escalates, Lebanon’s health ministry reported that Israeli airstrikes on Saturday resulted in 33 fatalities and 195 injuries. In total, over 1,000 people have been killed, more than 6,000 wounded, and about one million Lebanese displaced due to Israeli strikes over the past two weeks.
