The music world is mourning the loss of iconic R&B artist, songwriter, and producer Frankie Beverly, who passed away on Tuesday, September 10, at the age of 77.
On Wednesday morning, Beverly’s family confirmed the death of the founder of the funk and soul band Maze, born Howard Stanley Beverly.
“Grieving the loss of a loved one is a deeply personal and emotional experience. As we navigate through our sorrow, reflection, and remembrance, we kindly ask for privacy and understanding during this time of mourning,” the family said in a statement.
The message continued: “This period of healing is important to us, and we appreciate your respect for our need for solitude as we honor the memory of our beloved Howard Stanley Beverly, known to the world as Frankie Beverly.”
The family also reflected on Beverly’s life, stating: “He lived with pure soul, and for us, no one did it better. He was dedicated to his music, family, and friends. Love one another as he would have wanted for us all.”
Frankie Beverly’s musical journey began with the Blenders before recording with the Butlers. After catching the eye of renowned songwriter and producer Kenny Gamble, the group released several tracks under the Philly-based label Cameo Parkway.
Following a move to the West Coast, Beverly’s group evolved from Raw Soul to Maze, with whom he released nine gold albums.
Earlier this year, Beverly performed a farewell show at the Dell Music Center in North Philadelphia, marking the end of his 50-year career in music.
The family has not disclosed the cause of Beverly’s death.
