Israel’s military has announced that Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah has been killed in an airstrike on Beirut.
In a statement released on Saturday morning, September 28, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) declared: “The IDF will continue to target anyone who promotes and engages in terrorism against the citizens of the State of Israel.”
The IDF reported that Air Force fighter jets, guided by precise intelligence from their defense system, struck Hezbollah’s central headquarters, located underground beneath a residential building in the Dahieh area of Beirut.
Hezbollah is a Shiite Muslim political party and militant organization that opposes Israel and receives funding from Iran, Israel’s principal adversary. The group has supported Hamas since the conflict escalated between Israel and Palestine on October 7.
Nasrallah, who has not made a public appearance for years due to fears of assassination, has strong ties to Iran and has played a significant role in militarizing Hezbollah, including training Hamas members and militias in Yemen and Iraq.
Born in 1960 in Beirut, Nasrallah became involved with the Amal movement, a Shiite militia, during the Lebanese Civil War in 1975. He assumed leadership of Hezbollah in 1992 following the assassination of the former leader in a helicopter strike.
As of now, Hezbollah has not commented on Israel’s claim of his assassination.
