In a statement, Weinstein’s representatives, Craig Rothfeld and Juda Engelmayer, confirmed that Weinstein was admitted to Bellevue Hospital due to multiple medical conditions.
They reported, “Mr. Weinstein underwent a procedure and surgery on his heart today, but we cannot provide further details at this time.”
They also noted, “Mr. Weinstein has numerous significant health issues requiring ongoing treatment, and we appreciate the prompt action of the New York City Department of Correction and Rikers Island in getting him to Bellevue Hospital.”
Weinstein is scheduled to appear in court in New York this week, where prosecutors are presenting evidence to a grand jury in hopes of securing a new indictment on sex crimes charges. The 72-year-old former Hollywood producer was previously convicted of rape and sentenced to 23 years in prison in 2020, a landmark case for the #MeToo movement.
However, the New York Court of Appeals overturned the conviction in April, citing a lack of a fair trial due to improper testimony.
He faces a potential retrial in November. In addition, Weinstein was convicted in Los Angeles in 2022 of raping an actress, leading to a 16-year sentence, which remains unaffected by the New York court’s decision and has not yet begun.
Last Thursday, UK prosecutors dropped indecent assault charges against Weinstein, citing insufficient likelihood of conviction. Weinstein continues to deny all allegations of non-consensual sexual encounters.
