Aston Villa expressed their grief, stating they are “deeply shocked and profoundly saddened” by his passing.
Shaw was a key player for the club during the early 1980s, playing a vital role in Villa’s First Division title win in 1981 and their European Cup victory in 1982.
Throughout his career, Shaw scored 79 goals in 213 appearances for his childhood club before moving on to play for Blackpool, Walsall, Kilmarnock, Shrewsbury Town, and representing England U21.
In a statement, the club said: “Aston Villa Football Club is deeply shocked and profoundly saddened to learn of the passing of Gary Shaw, one of our European Cup-winning heroes. Gary was a gifted striker who thrilled fans with his goals, propelling Villa to success in the 1980s.”
The statement continued, “Individual honours soon followed for a player adored by many in the stands.”
Shaw passed away peacefully on September 16, surrounded by his family, who requested Aston Villa release a statement on their behalf. “The thoughts of everyone at the club are with Gary’s family and loved ones during this very difficult time. Rest in peace, Gary.”
Shaw was awarded the PFA Young Player of the Year in 1981 and was named Europe’s Best Young Player in 1982.
Unfortunately, a serious knee injury in 1983 impacted the remainder of his career, and he retired in 1992 after playing in Denmark, Austria, and Hong Kong.
Following his football career, Shaw worked as a statistical analyst and served as a club ambassador at Villa Park. He had been admitted to the hospital last week after suffering a head injury from a fall at his Birmingham home.
