The former Real Madrid defender, widely recognized as one of the top defenders of the 21st century, leaves behind a storied career with 34 trophies and a total of 878 appearances.
Pepe revealed his retirement decision in a glamorous video on Thursday, reflecting the illustrious titles he has amassed over his 23-year career in Spain.
In the video, Pepe expressed his gratitude: “I want to thank God for granting me the wisdom to continue my journey. I am deeply grateful to all the presidents who believed in me and to the employees of every club I’ve been with—they are the soul and essence of the team, including the national team. I also want to thank all my teammates and coaches, who helped me grow and compete every day, and the fans, who are the heart of football.
“I’m grateful to Jorge Mendes, Gestifute, and my mother, who played a crucial role in my journey by supporting my dream of becoming a professional footballer. Thanks to all my friends and family, especially my wife, who has been my home in my absence. My children also played a fundamental role in my life, supporting me while I was away from home. They were the support I needed to retire with a clear conscience.

During his time with Real Madrid, Pepe made 334 appearances, scoring 15 goals, providing 20 assists, and receiving 79 yellow cards along with three red cards. His tenure at Madrid saw him win the Club World Cup twice, the UEFA Super Cup twice, two Spanish Cups, three La Liga titles, and three Spanish Super Cups, in addition to his Champions League triumphs.
At Porto, Pepe enjoyed success with four Portuguese league titles, five Portuguese Cups, five Super Cups, and an intercontinental trophy.
On the international stage, Pepe was instrumental in ending Portugal’s long wait for a major title by winning Euro 2016 and later securing the UEFA Nations League.
