The light aircraft went down on the A419 Stroud Road near Aston Down airfield in the village of Frampton Mansell, Gloucestershire, at around 4:45 p.m. local time on Tuesday, August 27, according to a statement from Gloucestershire police on Facebook.
Police reported, “A light aircraft landed on the A419 Stroud Road. The two occupants on board are being assessed by the ambulance service, and no other vehicles were involved.”
A photo by Mila Vukelić showed the plane across the road with the pilot and passenger seated inside. The aircraft, with its wings entangled in shrubs and a damaged tail, was positioned in front of oncoming traffic.
A spokesperson for the South Western Ambulance Service NHS Trust told PEOPLE: “We dispatched a double-crewed land ambulance, an air ambulance, a rapid response vehicle, and an operations officer to the scene. One patient was transported to Southmead Hospital by land ambulance, and the other was taken to Gloucester Royal Hospital.”
Witnesses described the crash as the plane “nosediving” into the road. One observer noted to Gloucestershire Live that the plane appeared to stall before impacting the main road.
Another witness caught in traffic told BBC Radio Gloucestershire, “We saw what looked like a glider. My stepdaughter, who is a nurse, stayed at the scene to assist. The traffic was chaotic.”
