Lady Louise Windsor’s Time In The Brownies Helped Set Her Up For Military Success

Since beginning her studies at St. Andrews University two years ago, Lady Louise, 20, has fully immersed herself in student life by joining the University Officers’ Training Corps (UOTC), which offers paid military training for students.

Although her decision to pursue a military path may seem unexpected, the young royal has been preparing for such a career for some time, with childhood hobbies that laid the groundwork for her role.

Daughter of Duchess Sophie and Prince Edward, Lady Louise is skilled in carriage driving, a sport she inherited from her grandfather, Prince Philip. However, it was another childhood interest that significantly contributed to her readiness for military life. As a young girl, she was a member of the Brownies, a girl-guiding organization that fosters skill development and fun.

During her time in the Brownies, Lady Louise earned badges in areas such as camping, communication, and first aid—skills that are valuable in the military. The Brownies’ emphasis on standing up for beliefs, community service, and helping others aligns closely with military values.

Additionally, participation in the Brownies likely boosted Lady Louise’s confidence, as Girlguiding members are reported to have up to 23% higher confidence than the UK average—an essential trait for both a royal and a military member.

The Brownies’ uniform, designed to show membership in the Girlguiding community, bears a resemblance to military attire.

It’s no surprise that Lady Louise’s aunt, Princess Anne, was also a Brownie, and her mother, Duchess Sophie, who became President of Girlguiding UK in 2003, has been a strong advocate for the organization. During a walkabout following Queen Elizabeth’s death in 2022, Duchess Sophie praised a young Brownie for her dedication to the group.

Duchess Sophie must be immensely proud of how Lady Louise’s childhood hobby has shaped her path, setting a remarkable example for young Brownies aspiring to follow in her royal footsteps.
