The fatalities occurred in the Oshin area along Asa Dam road on Saturday, August 17, 2024. The victims, who have all been buried in accordance with Islamic traditions, are believed to have succumbed to food poisoning.
The deceased children are Abibat, 9, Zainab, 7, and Abdulfatai, 5. Reports indicate that the family had rice for breakfast before the parents left for the day. When they returned in the evening, the mother began preparing dinner and noticed their eldest daughter was unusually cold and clenching her teeth.
The girl was initially taken to Oreofe Hospital, then referred to Ilorin General Hospital, and finally to the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH), where she was pronounced dead.
Upon bringing their eldest daughter’s body to UITH, the family discovered that the other two children were also showing similar symptoms and rushed them to the hospital.
The mother began vomiting on Sunday and was taken to UITH, where she, along with her children, passed away in the early hours of Monday. The father, who had also consumed the rice, is now hospitalized for testing.
On Monday night, the family’s patriarch, Alhaji Jagunmolu Adinni, reported that sympathizers continue to visit the family.
Despite the tragedy, he expressed acceptance of the event as a test from Allah. The surviving family member is their son, Muhammad Basheer.
