The incidents occurred in Kofar Nassarawa, Kurnar Asabe, and Rijiyar Lemo. Videos shared by local residents show the bodies of some victims.
According to Daily Trust, Firdausi was struck by a stray bullet, allegedly from a police officer’s rifle in Rijiyar Lemo during the protest on Saturday. She was scheduled to marry next week.
Another reported victim, Abdulkadir Labaran Babah Alfindiki, was said to have been killed at Kofar Nassarawa.
His mother, Aisha Isah Babah, told Daily Trust: “He left home for his business. When he didn’t come for lunch, I became worried but didn’t call him or mention my concerns to anyone. I didn’t realize he had been killed.”
She expressed her despair, stating that as an orphan, she feels powerless to seek justice for her son.
Maryam Sani, mother of 15-year-old Kashifu Abdullahi Gyaranya who was also killed during the protest, recounted: “Before he left home, I asked where he was going, and he said he was just going out to see friends. I warned him not to join the protest, and he said he wouldn’t. Then I received the news of his death.”
Another victim, Umar Abubakar Hausawa, was reportedly killed by a stray bullet from the police during the protest at Kofar Nassarawa.
His brother, Rabiu Abubakar, said: “When Umar learned our younger brothers had joined the protest, he was upset and decided to bring them back. That was how he met his untimely death.”
In response, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, spokesperson for the State Police Command, said the police were trying to maintain order in Rijiyar Lemo as the youths attempted to overpower them.
Kiyawa explained, “The Kano State Government had imposed a curfew, and the youths tried to break into shops to steal. Our officers attempted to disperse them, but instead, the protesters became violent and threw stones at our personnel.”
He stated that the situation required additional police reinforcement to restore order and that the police are permitted to defend themselves. The command has launched an investigation to determine the specifics of the incidents.
