Soldiers have been called in after University of Benin students blocked the Benin/Ore highway on July 3.

They were protesting the lack of electricity on the Ugbowo and Ekhewan campuses in Benin.

The university plunged into darkness due to an unresolved dispute with the Benin Electricity Distribution Company over what students perceive as unfair electricity billing.

Faced with ongoing hardship from the outage, students took to the streets on Wednesday morning, blocking the outbound route of the Lagos-Benin Expressway.

One protesting student, identified only as John, expressed frustration that the one hour of daily electricity provided was insufficient and hindered their ability to study effectively.

“We only have one hour of electricity every day since this issue started. We are tired of studying in the dark.

“We need electricity to read and prepare for our exams. The university management needs to take responsibility and fix this issue.” he said
