The former Real Madrid player had the opportunity to give Portugal the lead in extra time during their match, which they eventually won via a penalty shootout later that night.
During a motivational talk from manager Roberto Martinez, the Portuguese captain became overwhelmed upon glancing towards the stands and seeing his 69-year-old mother, Dolores Aveiro, in tears.

In the subsequent penalty shootout between the two teams, Slovenia missed all three of their penalties, while Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes, and Bernardo Silva all scored, securing Portugal’s advancement to the next stage.
