An executioner was photographed administering the caning in the presence of Islamic court officials and onlookers gathered on Monday, July 1.

Two of the convicts were attired in white tunics, while the other two wore red tops bearing the name of the district attorney’s office, before taking their turns to receive their respective punishments.

The four Acehnese men received lashes ranging from 19 to 42 for their offense of consuming alcohol, known as ‘khamar’ under Sharia law. A police officer oversaw the punishments while using a microphone.

According to local reports, three of the men who received 42 lashes were identified as M. Fais Akbar, Aulia Syahputra, and Yusdi, while Cukri Ramadhan received 19 lashes.

Before the caning commenced, all men underwent a health assessment conducted by a team of medical professionals, who confirmed their fitness to undergo the punishment.

Kompas reported that the caning was momentarily paused for one of the men after he expressed distress following 10 lashes. Medical staff provided him with fluids and assessed his condition before the punishment resumed.

“After today’s execution of the caning sentences for four individuals found guilty of consuming alcohol, known as ‘khamar,’ the process has been completed,” stated the Head of the Banda Aceh District Prosecutor’s Office following the proceedings.
