Police Officer Who Lost Both Hands After Tear Gas Canister Detonated During Protests

A Kenyan police officer, Inspector David Maina, accidentally blew up his hands during a protest in Nairobi last week.

Inspector Maina, a member of the Rapid Deployment Unit (RDU), was confronting protesters in the Nairobi city center on Tuesday, June 18, when the incident occurred. The protest was in opposition to the finance bill.

During the confrontation, police deployed water cannons and tear gas to disperse the crowd.

Tragically, Inspector Maina lost both hands when a tear gas canister detonated in his hands. He is currently receiving treatment at Nairobi West Hospital.
