A Peep Into Hugh Grosvenor’s £10 Billion Fortune And Extensive Property Profile

The Duke, also known as Hugh Grosvenor, was previously hailed as Britain’s most eligible bachelor due to his youthful good looks, aristocratic lineage, royal connections, and billionaire status.

As of last month, the 33-year-old Hugh topped The Sunday Times 40 Under 40 Rich List with a fortune of £10.1 billion.

This wealth surpasses that of his close friend Prince William, who is serving as one of his ushers at his upcoming wedding, and his godfather King Charles, whose personal wealth is valued at £610 million.

Hugh’s Inherited Fortune

Hughie, as he is known among friends, was born into privilege and wealth. Despite this, the philanthropic Duke is said to be humble, modest, and very low-key.

He inherited his title, the family’s ancestral seat Eaton Hall near Chester, and control of the historic Grosvenor Estate at the age of 25. This happened when his father, Gerald Grosvenor, the 6th Duke of Westminster, unexpectedly passed away from a heart attack in August 2016. Gerald, who was 64 at the time, fell ill while out walking on his Abbeystead Estate in Lancashire. He was airlifted to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Gerald Grosvenor, 6th Duke of Westminster, sadly passed away in 2016

Following Gerald’s death, Hugh, his third child with wife Natalia, became the new 7th Duke of Westminster and instantly became a billionaire overnight.

His Learning and Occupation

Gerald was firm in his decision that his four children would receive their education locally, influenced by his own experience of bullying at Harrow boarding school. Consequently, Hugh attended the private school Ellesmere College in Shropshire before pursuing a Countryside Management course at Newcastle University.

Previously, Hugh worked as an account manager at Bio-bean, a sustainability company that converts coffee waste into bioproducts like logs and biofuel. Nowadays, he oversees the family’s Westminster Foundation, a charitable organization focused on supporting vulnerable youth.

He also serves as Chair of the Grosvenor Group, his family’s property company which owns approximately 300 acres of land in London’s affluent areas such as Mayfair and Belgravia, and is involved in major city center developments like Liverpool’s ONE shopping center.

Following the wedding, Hugh and Olivia plan to relocate from London up north, where the nature-loving Duke reportedly intends to pursue full-time farming.

Hugh’s Property Portfolio

Known as the man who owns half of Mayfair, the Duke’s connection with the opulent central London postcode dates back to the 1720s, when his family transformed swamps, pastures, and orchards into a new district called Mayfair. The area derived its name from the annual fair held there every May.

A century later, his ancestors developed the area now recognized as Belgravia, the open land situated between Hyde Park and the River Thames.

In addition to their extensive London holdings, the Grosvenor Group also possesses 23,500 acres in Lancashire and nearly 100,000 acres in Scotland at the Reay Forest estate. The property empire also boasts buildings in more than 40 cities worldwide.

Eaton Hall

Upon becoming the 7th Duke of Westminster, Hugh inherited his family’s ancestral seat, Eaton Hall, located in Cheshire.

This Friday, wedding guests will celebrate the reception at Eaton Hall following the church wedding at Chester Cathedral, similar to what Hugh’s older sister Lady Tamara did in 2004 when she married Edward van Cutsem.

It is unclear whether Hugh and Olivia will reside at Eaton Hall after their move up north, but if they do, it will certainly be an ideal place to begin the next chapter of their lives. The French chateau-style property, which has been in the Grosvenor family since the 15th century, includes a deer park, formal gardens, parkland, farmland, and woodland covering over 10,000 acres.
