The warden of HMP Wakefield, known as the ‘Monster Mansion’ for housing some of the nation’s most dangerous criminals, faces allegations of engaging in s*xual relationships with multiple inmates.
Nearly two-thirds of the inmates in this high-security prison are convicted of s*x offenses, including notorious individuals such as John Warboys and former Lostprophets singer Ian Watkins.
According to the new book “Inside Wakefield Prison: Life Behind Bars in the Monster Mansion,” a pen pal of Bellfield’s claimed that a staff member “had s*xual relations with several inmates,” but was reportedly dismissed after committing to a relationship with one inmate. Bellfield, a former bouncer, was sentenced to life in 2008 for the hammer murders of Amelie Delagrange, 22, and Marsha McDonnell, 19, as well as the attempted murder of Kate Sheedy, 18. He was later convicted in 2011 for the murder of schoolgirl Milly Dowler, 13.
Authors Jonathan Levi and Emma French also reveal in the book that convicted s*x offender Ian Watkins allegedly pays gang members for protection.
The book further describes notorious inmate Charles Bronson as behaving “like a spoiled brat,” and mentions that “Dr. Death” Harold Shipman, who was convicted of murdering 15 patients by lethal injection in 2000, reportedly gave medical advice to other prisoners.
While the Ministry of Justice denied Shipman provided medical advice, former prison officer Martin Baker claimed inmates informed him that Shipman diagnosed them with conditions.
Shipman died by suicide in 2004, and an investigation concluded that prison staff could not have foreseen or prevented his death. However, the book asserts that at least two officers were aware of Shipman’s intention to commit suicide.
The book also mentions Roy Whiting, convicted of the kidnapping and murder of Sarah Payne in 2000, who reportedly faces hostility within the prison and is said to rarely leave his cell except to use a sewing machine.
