The 54-year-old woman stabbed herself with a pair of scissors purchased at an airport pharmacy, in front of shocked holidaymakers.
Initially in a “serious but stable” condition after being rushed to Can Misses Hospital on Ibiza, her condition deteriorated to “critical” in the intensive care unit later that afternoon.
The incident unfolded yesterday morning at the airport, where she inflicted multiple stab wounds to her neck just outside the pharmacy. Photos from the scene depicted blood on the terminal floor, which was reportedly busy at the time.
Police began investigating the incident promptly, though it remained unclear whether the woman was alone or accompanied, and what circumstances led to her self-harm. It is also uncertain if she intended to board a flight.
A worker at the chemist’s where she bought the scissors and began stabbing herself, said: “I tried to stop her but it was difficult because she was a large woman.”
Another witness said: “There were other people in the chemist’s at the time. There was blood all over the floor outside before airport workers arrived to clean it once the woman had been taken away in an ambulance.”
