In Memphis, Tennessee, late Saturday, police reported that two individuals were killed and at least six others were injured in a shooting at a block party.
Memphis Police Chief C.J. Davis stated that authorities believe at least two individuals opened fire at the gathering, which attracted up to 300 people.
As of Saturday night, no suspects had been apprehended, and the motive behind the shooting remained unclear. Police responded to the scene at 7:19 p.m. CT, discovering five victims with gunshot wounds. Three of them were transported to local hospitals, while two male victims were pronounced dead at the scene.
Additionally, several other gunshot victims arrived at hospitals in private vehicles. One of the injured victims was in critical condition as of early Sunday.
Initially, the Memphis Police Department reported a total of 16 gunshot victims, but a subsequent investigation revealed that there were eight victims, including the two fatalities. The department attributed the discrepancy to several victims being reported multiple times.
The investigation into the shooting is on-going, with Davis mentioning that the department has obtained video footage from the scene and is actively seeking those responsible. Davis emphasized the department’s dedication to identifying the individuals involved in the incident and urged anyone with information or footage to come forward and assist law enforcement.
This tragic event adds to the tally of over 115 mass shootings reported in the United States thus far this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive. The archive, in alignment with CNN’s definition, categorizes a mass shooting as one in which at least four people are shot, excluding the shooter.
