‘The Specter Of War Looms Closer Than Ever Before’ - Sir Michael Fallon Underscores The Imperative Of Bolstering Our Defense Capabilities

The UK’s security is under threat as the world becomes increasingly perilous. Those hostile to our interests are gaining strength and showing greater aggression, bringing us closer to the brink of conflict than at any point since 1945.

To avert war, it is imperative that we fortify our defenses to dissuade potential adversaries and safeguard our citizens.

The recent assault by Putin’s regime on Ukraine has already inflicted economic costs on us, resulting in higher energy and food prices. Putin’s ambitions extend beyond Ukraine; he seeks to reclaim control over other democracies, even those within the NATO alliance. Furthermore, his actions have resulted in fatalities on our own streets.

Meanwhile, China’s assertive global aspirations are evidenced by its extensive naval expansion, including the development of additional nuclear submarines, assault ships, and aircraft carriers. Additionally, the nuclear missile programs of Iran and North Korea pose a grave threat to global security.

Closer to home, Islamist terrorists have perpetrated attacks in London and Manchester, and now they target British shipping in the Red Sea, disrupting vital trade routes.

To uphold our national security and deter potential adversaries, we must strengthen our military capabilities. This entails increased investment in defense, including bolstering our navy, expanding our fleet of fighter jets, enhancing missile defense systems, and augmenting our army to collaborate with allies in safeguarding our freedoms.

While there are competing priorities such as improving healthcare, addressing housing issues for young people, and modernizing infrastructure, defense must remain a paramount concern. As one of the world’s oldest democracies, it is our responsibility to defend our values and uphold the rule of law.

Therefore, the upcoming election presents an opportunity for action. We urge all political parties and candidates in every constituency to commit to allocating 2.5 percent of the national income to defense spending annually throughout the new Parliament, with a commitment to increase it to 3 percent by its conclusion. Anything less than this level of investment will compromise the safety and security of our people.
