The Danish Palace Unveils Updates Regarding King Frederik As Queen Mary Undertakes Engagements Solo

Queen Mary has been carrying out her royal duties independently since returning from her Easter break this week. The 52-year-old mother-of-four commemorated the 75th anniversary of the establishment of the Home Guard and exhibited a stylish country casual ensemble while inaugurating a Deer Park in Copenhagen last week.

She then impressed in a cobalt blue trouser suit from London-based label The Fold as she celebrated the 20th anniversary of the Specialists at the National Museum in Copenhagen on Tuesday.

Notably, King Frederik did not accompany Mary to any of her engagements, and the monarch has not been seen publicly since March 22 when he attended the Society for the Promotion of Natural Studies 200th Anniversary event. Frederik’s last public appearance with Mary was on March 21 when they visited the new exhibition, “Frederik X: King Of Tomorrow,” at Amalienborg Museum.

Some royal observers have been speculating about the king’s next public appearance. This week, the Danish royal palace has provided updates on forthcoming engagements. The Danish royal family is set to make a balcony appearance on Frederik’s 56th birthday on May 26, as confirmed by the palace. Frederik and Mary are expected to be joined by their four children – Crown Prince Christian (18), Princess Isabella (16), and twins Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine (both 13).

In the meantime, Queen Margrethe, who stepped down from the throne on January 14, will observe her 84th birthday in private at Fredensborg Castle on April 16.

Prior to Frederik’s birthday, he and Mary are scheduled to undertake two state visits. The royal couple will journey to Sweden from May 6 to 7 to meet with King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia. Frederik and Mary also enjoy a longstanding friendship with the future queen of Sweden, Crown Princess Victoria, and her husband, Prince Daniel. Victoria serves as Crown Prince Christian’s godmother, while Mary is the godmother to Victoria and Daniel’s eldest child, Princess Estelle. Additionally, Frederik is the godfather to Victoria and Daniel’s youngest son, Prince Oscar.

Following their visit to Sweden, the Danish royals will reunite with King Harald, Queen Sonja, Crown Prince Haakon, and Crown Princess Mette-Marit during their state visit to Norway from May 14 to 15. Frederik served as Haakon’s best man at his wedding to Mette-Marit Tjessem Høiby in 2001, and Haakon is also the godfather to Crown Prince Christian. Additionally, Mary and Frederik will commemorate their 20th wedding anniversary on May 14 during the Norway state visit.

Subsequently, the king, queen, and Crown Prince Christian will partake in the Royal Run on May 20. Initiated by Frederik to celebrate his 50th birthday in 2018, the Royal Run has since become an annual running challenge.
