Once Prince William assumes the throne, he will rank as the second-tallest monarch ever recorded in British history. Topping out at 6 feet 3 inches (191cm), he surpasses the stature of all other members of his family.
His father, King Charles, stands at 5 feet 10 inches (178cm), sharing the same height as the late Diana, Princess of Wales. William’s wife, Princess Kate, also stands at a significant height of 5 feet 9 inches (175cm).
Royal commentator Wesley Kerr noted in Tatler: “His height puts him in the top four English kings in history alongside Edward I, Edward IV and Charles II.”
Edward I held his reign from 1272 until 1307 and earned the monikers ‘Edward Longshanks’ or ‘the Hammer of the Scots’. Standing tall at an impressive height of 6 feet 2 inches (188cm), a rarity for his era.
Charles II, known as the Merry Monarch, governed from 1630 to 1685. Remarkably, at the age of four months, his mother remarked he appeared as though he were a year old. Despite his tender age, he stood at the same height of 6 feet 2 inches and engaged in battles as early as 12 years old.
The tallest among British monarchs was Edward IV, measuring at an astounding 6 feet 4½ inches (194cm). Clad in armor, the King’s stature would have been roughly 6 feet 7 inches. Edward’s reign spanned nearly 22 years, from 1461 to 1483, briefly interrupted in 1470 by a six-month deposition.
Wesley further said regarding the Prince of Wales, saying: “William is maybe a new kind of leader who can keep the monarchy relevant and resonant in the coming decades.”
