Ex-Steinhoff CEO Markus Jooste was confirmed dead in South Africa after reports emerge that he shot himself as police about arresting him, just a day after he was ordered to pay a £19million fine over a major fraud scandal.
Prior to His Death
The former Poundland boss, aged 63, had been notified of a warrant for his arrest shortly before he was found dead, according to police report.
His body was found Friday on a beach in the neighbourhood of Hermanus – a few hundred metres from his luxury compound.
At The Crime Scene
At the scene, pictures showed blood spattered on rocks.
The father-of-three was handed the biggest fine in South African history, on Wednesday, and had reportedly booked a flight from Cape Town to Johannesburg on Thursday evening to hand himself in for a court hearing on Friday.
Instead, he told his wife Ingrid he was going for a walk. Shortly after, police arrived at his home, and he is said to have shot himself in the head as they closed in.
He was still alive at the time as he was rushed to the hospital, before he succumbed a few minutes after arrival at the hospital.
