Warner Bros. unveiled the first trailer for Kevin Costner‘s sweeping new directorial effort Horizon: An American Saga, which features his son Hayes’ acting debut.
The Role of Son, Hayes
The actor and director’s 15-year-old son plays the younger version of his unnamed character in the film, which is the first part of a planned four-movie quadrilogy.
The film marks Costner’s fourth directorial effort and his first in 20 years since his 2003 Western Open Range.
While there is still very little known about the story, Costner’s character will be at the heart of it.
What The Trailer Shows
The trailer offers a first glimpse at Hayes’ acting chops, where he’s seen defying his mother’s orders and choosing to stay with his father.
Early on in the trailer, while the family is sleeping, the home is attacked, as the wife and daughter are rushed to safety through a tunnel under the home.
However, Hayes stayes behind, telling his mother, ‘It’s OK, I’m gonna be with dad,’ and while his mother protests, he shuts the door over her.
It’s unclear how big a role Hayes has in the film, though Costner did reveal his son’s involvement in an interview with People back in November 2022.
‘He’s very good. Hayes plays the namesake character that I actually play in the movie,’ Costner admitted.
The actor and director also co-wrote the script with Jon Baird, joking, ‘the screenplay’s been around longer’ than his son has been alive.

‘I kind of did it on purpose, so he could be hanging out with me. And the same thing for Cayden, same thing for Grace. I’m like any other parent, I’m trying to figure out, like, “This is really neat. You should come be with me,”‘ he added.
It’s unclear if Cayden, 17, and Grace, 13, also have roles in either the first film or the other films that will follow.
Since 1988
Costner had first envisioned Horizon as a single film back in 1988, and he approached Disney with the idea after his last directorial effort, Open Range.
Costner co-wrote the script with writer Jon Baird, who he co-wrote the 2015 novel The Explorers Guild with.
