SCOTLAND – A bus driver has died after being attacked at a station in Elgin, northern Scotland, on Friday night, as police confirmed a 15-year-old boy had been arrested.
The 58-year-old man, who worked for Stagecoach North, was attended by emergency services following reports of an assault at Elgin bus station, in St Giles Road, at around 10.40pm on Friday.
He was Rushed but Died
He was taken to nearby Dr Grays Hospital, but died shortly afterwards.
Elgin bus station was closed on Saturday as police erected a cordon around the scene.
A spokesperson for Stagecoach North said: ‘We are shocked and saddened by this news and our immediate thoughts are with the family and friends of our driver who has sadly passed away.
Safety is our number one priority and incidents like this are extremely rare.
‘We are doing everything we can to support our colleagues and our driver’s family as well as assisting the police in their investigation.’
Statement From Police
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: ‘Around 10.40pm on Friday 2 February, police were called to the St Giles Road area of Elgin following a report of the assault of a 58-year-old man.
‘Emergency services attended, and the man was taken to Dr Gray’s hospital in Elgin where he later died.
‘A 15-year-old male youth has been arrested in connection with the incident and inquiries are continuing.’
Cllr Amber Dunbar, who represents Elgin City North, wrote on social media: ‘Very sad to hear this tragic news. My thoughts are with the driver’s family and the whole Stagecoach team who do fantastic work in the community. No one should go to work and not come home.’
Richard Lochhead, MSP for Moray, described the incident as ‘tragic and horrific.’
