TV SHOW – Millie Gibson has reportedly been dropped from Doctor Who after just one series and will be replaced by another TV star.
The former Coronation Street actress, 19, made her much-anticipated debut as the Fifteenth Doctor’s companion Ruby Sunday in the 2023 Christmas special.
The upcoming 2024 season of the smash hit sci-fi show will return to screens in May for an eight-episode run, with Ncuti Gatwa taking over as the iconic Time Lord.
However, Millie’s character Ruby has reportedly already been written out by showrunner Russell T Davies and it has been said she will be replaced by Varada Sethu for Ncuti’s second series.
An insider said: ‘Millie Gibson has all but left now and there’s a brand new companion, which is really exciting. Russell is keeping things moving and isn’t letting the grass grow, that’s for sure.’
It has been claimed that Millie will be finishing up on the show in the coming weeks to ‘tie up loose ends’ and will not appear in the 2024 Christmas special.
She will reportedly only appear in a handful of episodes before being replaced by Varada, 32, who is said to have already started filming at the show’s Cardiff studios.
Varada is well known for playing DS Mishal Ali in the BBC apocalyptic TV Series Hard Sun and also featured in Now You See Me 2 as Michael Caine’s character’s assistant.
She is also recognisable for her role as Cinta in Disney’s Star Wars spin-off series Andor, starring Diego Luna.
Previous Doctor Who companion Bill Potts, portrayed by Pearl Mackie, only had a one-series run on the sci-fi show alongside Peter Capaldi’s version of the Doctor.
Other companions have had stayed on the show for a number of years, including Jenna Coleman’s Clara Oswald, Billie Piper’s character Rose Tyler and Karen Gillan’s Amy Pond.
