But Russia’s Defense Ministry claims it stopped the attack, which involved three marine drones.
The drones reportedly were intercepted and destroyed. Yet the bridge across the Kerch Strait was closed for a short time.
The bridge might not have been the goal of the mission. The Rybar channel on Telegram says one of the drones lurked among several anchored ships and a Russian patrol boat may have been the target.
Yet Ukraine has aimed at the Kerch Strait bridge before. Knewz reported in mid-August on an attack with two missiles, which was visible to beachgoers on a Saturday afternoon.
A sea drone from Ukraine also was used to damage the bridge in mid-July. Knewz reported about the video from Ukraine’s Security Service showing that strike which killed two people.
A truck bomb went off on the Crimean bridge in October 2022, killing three people, Russian officials confirmed.
The 12-mile bridge was built in 2018, in the wake of Russian troops seizing Crimea years earlier.
Britain’s Sun tabloid reported the latest drone attack caused traffic to back up in both directions on the bridge.
According to The Independent, one drone was stopped late Friday, September 1, while two more were intercepted the following day.
An aide to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelinsky says drones will keep on coming, even if Ukraine does not claim them as their own.
“There is an increasing number of attacks by unidentified drones launched from the territory of the Russian Federation,” Mykhailo Podolyak said. “The number of these attacks will increase.”
Attacks by both sides in the fighting are taking no weekend break. Ukrainian governors say Russian shelling killed at least two people and injured two others.
Ukraine’s military counted four missile strikes and 39 air strikes by the Russians on Saturday, September 2. Rocket launchers were used in 42 other attacks.
British military officials say Ukraine is gaining enough territory in the south that Russia might have to divide its army to stop the advance.
U.S. defense officials have a similar view. They agree with Ukrainian Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Maliar that troops are moving forward in the Zaporizhzhia region.
More than 12 villages captured by Russia last year reportedly have been reclaimed. But the counteroffensive must be cautious, as Russians reportedly have sown minefields along the way.
Zelensky issued his own Telegram statement declaring his military is “on the move.
“Despite everything, and no matter what anyone says, we are advancing, and that is the most important thing,” Zelenskyy said.
