Delanie Kristek, a 27-year-old marketing consultant from Dallas, Texas, recently went viral with a TikTok video discussing the ‘mental toll’ that the months-long process of changing her surname had on her after tying the knot.

Delanie, who wanted her surname to match her husband’s, posted the more than two-minute-long video listing all the things she had to adjust.

Why it’s hardwork changing your name after marriage

‘Men in heterosexual marriages will never understand the mental load and time investment of changing your last name,’ the newlywed declared in the clip, which has more than 1.3 million views.

She then went on to explain she was in the process of changing her surname, and even though she had a helping hand from the NewlyNamed name-change kit, it was still a long and exhaustive process.

‘Everything’s on the government website, which we already know is trash,’ the content creator complained.

‘It is time consuming’

‘All I’ve changed is my [social security], and now I’m on to the point where I’m changing my driver’s license. This is just incredibly time consuming.’

Delanie then went on to explain she tried to make an appointment at the Department of Public Service (DPS), which is what Texas calls the DMV, and there wasn’t anything available until January next year.

‘Guess what? I have a flight in December 2023,’ she raged. ‘The name on my ticket is my new last name.’

Delanie then said she had to drive ‘all the way’ to another DPS, which was a 40-minute trip there and back.

‘I’ve only changed my social and my driver’s license,’ she said incredulously. ‘I still gotta change my insurance cards, I gotta change my bank accounts, I gotta change my passport, I’ve got to change my Global Entry.’
