In a cry for help, Nollywood actress and ROK studios CEO, Mary Remmy Njoku, expressed her frustration over the economic challenges in Nigeria.
Taking to her Instagram page, the mother of three revealed that she went shopping and spent N100k at the supermarket, only to find that her trolley was not full. She expressed incredulity over the extent of poverty in Nigeria and questioned the adequacy of the minimum wage.
Mary Njoku also pondered on how the average citizens are preparing for Christmas amidst such financial hardship. She exclaimed, “The poverty in Nigeria is at a whole new level! How is the average man planning for Christmas? This is crazy! I spent 100k at the supermarket and the trolley was not full. How can anyone survive on the minimum wage?”
A few days ago, Mary Njoku voiced her concerns regarding the state of affairs in the country. In her previous statement, the wife of Iroko boss, Jason Njoku, revealed that she paid 664 naira at the toll gate, questioning whether it has become the norm or if she was cheated. She also highlighted how it now requires more than the minimum monthly wage to fill a car’s fuel tank.
Mary Njoku is not the only celebrity who has spoken up about the hardships faced in Nigeria. Iyabo Ojo, reacting to the government’s decision to provide N8k monthly to impoverished Nigerians, expressed uncertainty about their ability to endure until the alleged “Renewed Hope” is realized. She emphasized the prevailing hunger in the country and criticized the government’s insufficient palliative measures.
Similarly, Wumi Toriola lamented the surge in fuel prices and her wavering thoughts about the country. She observed the disappearance of the middle class, leaving only the rich and the poor as distinct categories.
Mabel Makun, the wife of comedian Ayo Makun, joined the chorus of complaints by decrying the devastating impact of the exchange rate on businesses. She bemoaned the fact that basic needs have become luxuries, making it difficult for the average person to afford even a loaf of bread, leading some parents to withdraw their children from school for home tutoring.
Adding her voice to the list, Kemi Afolabi called on the Nigerian government to stop suffocating its citizens. The actress criticized the escalating prices of goods, which have worsened the country’s already dire situation, and pleaded for mercy on behalf of the masses.
