Two of football’s most famous families have found themselves under the microscope of late with tell-all docuseries lifting the lids on their life and careers.
First up came David Beckham‘s Netflix show BECKHAM, which followed the sports star’s meteoric rise from humble beginnings to global football stardom.
Exactly two weeks later was the release of Coleen Rooney‘s Disney+ series The Real Wagatha Story, which saw her discuss her libel case with fellow WAG Rebekah Vardy.
While her programme was centered on the feud, it mirrored parts of David’s show with candid looks at her loved ones, glimpses inside her mega mansion and reflecting on past scandals that rocked her marriage.
Musical moments
BECKHAM
The fourth and final episode of the documentary showed David enjoying a sweet dance with his wife Victoria to Islands In The Stream.
The scene began with the footballer preparing a plate of mussels for his wife at their home in The Cotswolds, while Kenny Rogers’ iconic hit with Dolly Parton played in the background.
The couple then playfully danced along to Islands In The Stream together, before Victoria turned to David and said: ‘Why I feel happy now is I feel really content now, and I get that sense you feel really content now.
‘You’re passing the baton on a little and you want that for your kids.’
The Real Wagatha Story
The final part of Coleen’s docuseries also ended on a musical note, with the credits rolling over a video of the WAG and her husband at a Lewis Capaldi concert.
The sweet home video showed Wayne embracing his wife as he serenaded her by singing Somebody You Love.
As they swayed together to the music the show came to a finish.
Cameos from their VERY honest mothers
BECKHAM
David’s mother Sandra had a starring role in her son’s docuseries, detailing his love of football from a young age and revealing how he blossomed into one of England’s best ever players.
Sandra, 74, also spoke candidly about the concerns she had when David began dating Victoria Beckham, admitting she used to ‘intercept’ calls between the pair.
She recalled: ‘Victoria would be away and we’d be staying at David’s house and 3 o’clock in the morning the phone would ring.
‘He had a game so I’d answer the phone and say “he’s in bed, asleep” and they’d want to talk. But me being a protective mum thought “you shouldn’t really be ringing this time in the morning”.
‘But how can you tell them? They’re adults. I was worried he’d lose all he worked for because football come first and all of a sudden it wasn’t.’

Coleen’s mother Colette made her feelings about Wayne Rooney clear in the show as she reflected on the footballer’s 2017 drink driving scandal.

Colette took in Coleen and the children while she worked through her marital issues, with the matriarch admitting she ‘didn’t always like’ her daughter’s spouse.
She explained: ‘As parents you don’t want your daughter to be going through that. You’re mad, you’re angry, you’re upset, all you want to do is protect her.
‘She was speaking to Wayne and trying to work things out. I love him but sometimes I don’t like him. I feel like shaking him. Coleen is what matters.’
Colette revealed Wayne later apologised to her and Coleen’s father Tony for the stress he’d caused the family and said she told her daughter: ‘Whatever you choose we’ll stick by you.’
A look back at their love stories
BECKHAM
David, 48, and Victoria, 49, took fans on a trip down memory lane as they gave fans an intimate insight into their marriage and early romance, their family life, as well as charting David’s footballing career.
The couple have been married for 24 years since first meeting in 1997 and now share four children Brooklyn, 24, Romeo, 21, Cruz, 18, and Harper, 12.
Reflecting on the couple’s love story in the show, David’s friends and loved ones recalled their shock at the extreme lengths the Manchester United player would go to in order to spend time with her, saying he was ‘addicted’ to seeing Victoria.
The pair’s intense and conflicting schedule – with David at football training in Manchester and Victoria touring the world with The Spice Girls – meant that they rarely had any free time together.
Yet David didn’t let it stop him from doing all he could to meet up during their early courtship in 1997, with the sportsman, 48, confessing: ‘I didn’t care when I saw her, how much I saw her. If it was me driving down to London to see her for seven minutes, I did it!’
He added: ‘Everything about Victoria, I loved. I didn’t know she was the strong woman that she was and I like that. I don’t whether it was because I wanted her to look after me…’
The Real Wagatha Story
Coleen also reflected on her 20-year relationship with Wayne as she discussed their first meeting and spoke candidly about her marital struggles.
She met her childhood sweetheart Wayne, 37, at the age of 12 as they grew up in the Liverpool suburb of Croxteth and they began a relationship at the age of 16.
They then tied the knot in their early 20s at a romantic wedding in Portofino, Italy, on June 12, 2008, and now share four sons – Kai, 13, Klay, 10, Kit, seven, and Cass, five.
Sweet images of the pair cuddled up to each other in their younger years flashed up on screen as Coleen gushed over what first attracted her to Wayne.
She revealed: ‘I first met Wayne when we were really young. He used to always shout give us a date. He was cheeky, always sure of himself.’
While Wayne said: ‘I think Coleen wasn’t sure if I was being serious, but I knew she was different to all the other girls in the area and I really liked her.
‘She was very committed to her schoolwork and worked hard in school. Coleen and her family were a bit posher than my family was and I was a bit on the wild side but I knew Coleen was more disciplined. I just felt she knew what she wanted.’
Candid discussions on mental health
BECKHAM
Emotional David spoke for the first time about his mental health battle after being blamed for England’s World Cup 1998 exit because he kicked Diego Simeone.
Reflecting on the turbulent period, which David faced at the age of just 23, the athlete confessed he was a ‘mess’ and left unable to eat or sleep, with wife Victoria revealing he suffered from clinical depression and the experience ‘broke’ him.
David recalled feeling ‘very vulnerable and alone’ as he landed back in the UK to hordes of jeering spectators and negative press, with his father Ted admitting David was ‘distraught’ when he met him, saying the young sports star ‘fell into my arms and said, “I’ve left everybody down.”‘

‘That’s the tough part that happened then. I’m 47 years old now and I beat myself up about it still. Inside it killed me.’
The Real Wagatha Story
Coleen revealed the stress of the Wagatha Christie trial made her physically sick, admitting she ‘completely changed her character’ and struggled to find enjoyment in anything.
She explained: ‘It was horrible because I didn’t want to be around people and that’s not me at all. I was snappy at the kids, I just hated trying to be happy.
‘I could see people were concerned but it was just constantly on my mind. I couldn’t get away from it.’
Coleen also concerned her family with her behaviour in the States after she and the children moved to be with Wayne while he played for D.C United.
She struggled with feelings of loneliness, with Wayne’s agent Paul Stretford saying: ‘She was homesick and depressed about it and didn’t know what to do. Her personality changed.’
Wayne added: ‘Coleen was down and she was upset. She was in a difficult place.
‘I spoke to my agent and said I need to come back to England as soon as I can because Coleen’s really struggling.’
