TRIBUTES to pub landlord who died after he was stabbed – as police arrest woman on suspicion of murder

Police have arrested a woman on suspicion of murdering a pub landlord, as tributes are paid to him.

Death of the landlord

The man, named locally as Matthew Bryant, was found with life-threatening stab wounds by police who were called to Lower Boxley Road in Maidstone at about 18:00 BST on Monday.

Mr Bryant was given medical treatment, but died at the scene, a police spokesman said.

Tributes have been paid to a pub landlord who died after he was stabbed just three days after his wedding anniversary.

A woman in her 50s, known to Mr Bryant, was arrested at the scene.

One of Mr Bryant’s friends, Jason Chapman, told the BBC: ‘I was driving past this morning and I saw all this going on and I thought ”I’ll text Matt and see what happened last night”.

‘When I went on to his Facebook and saw it was Matt, I couldn’t believe it. I knew him because I was a doorman when he was the manager of the V Bar in Maidstone.’

Tributes

Mr Chapman added: ‘He was a lovely guy. He would help anyone. He was always a happy and friendly guy.

‘It’s such a shock.’

Matthew had worked as a pub landlord for 25 years and had taken over the Hare and Hounds in 2015, according to reports.

More tributes have now been paid to him, with Becky Whitehead saying: ‘R.I.P Matt. Love and thoughts to the family and friends. I’m so sorry for your loss.’

Chris Leach said: ‘He really didn’t. Hadn’t got a bad bone in his body. You couldn’t help but love him.’

Mark Osborne added: ‘Matt and Caroline were the best landlords you could ever meet all my thoughts go out to all his family and friends heaven has got a true angel. R.I.P Matt.’
