Potential protests and disruptions loom
Parents of high school students have been informed about potential protests and disruptions related to the hiring of a trans teacher, Kayla Lemieux, according to a memo obtained by the Toronto Sun.
Principal Tom Fisher detailed that safety precautions have been heightened in anticipation of the controversy that might ensue.
Measures include designated entry and exit doors for students, locking exterior doors during school hours, and utilizing an intercom system for building access.
Parents are also advised to communicate in advance if they wish to visit the school.
The Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board stated that parents have been informed about the increased public interest surrounding the school.
While the memo did not explicitly name Lemieux, it referred to ‘an experienced educator’ recently under public scrutiny for gender expression while teaching in a different community.
It remains uncertain whether Lemieux will teach shop at the school, and the memo did not mention potential consequences for students taking photos or videos of her, as happened in her previous school.
She was placed on paid leave in March
Lemieux was placed on paid leave in March by the Halton School District when a photo of her wearing prosthetic breasts went viral, leading to backlash and threats against the school.
Lemieux, who claimed her breasts were real due to a condition called gigantomastia, faced controversy in her previous school due to her appearance.
Despite the circumstances, Fisher emphasized that the school and district do not currently face safety concerns, with the memo aimed at keeping parents informed about possible media interest and protests.
The teacher’s hiring has sparked discussions surrounding individual rights, gender expression, and educational environments.
