Paul Jose Rodriguez Jr tragically died when his kayak overturned in strong currents while he was paddling on a glacial lake in southern Alaska, USA.
The entire incident was inadvertently captured on video, according to police, who reviewed the footage after the camera was discovered washed up on the shore by a passerby.
Alaska State Troopers launched a huge search and rescue operation after an unattended kayak was spotted floating on the lake near the city of Juneau on Monday.
Helicopters and specially trained dogs scoured the area around the 200-ft deep Mendenhall Lake, where the water temperature is only 10C at this time of year.
But despite their efforts, Mr Rodriguez Jr’s body still hasn’t been found, reports Sky News.
The 43-year-old was last seen by his roommate on July 10 and set out onto the water on July 11 after posting a picture on social media of his kayak on a beach near Nugget Falls.
A Juneau Police Department official said: ‘A review of the video determined Rodriguez had drowned on July 11 when his kayak overturned, and he went into the glacial water.
‘Teams will continue to search the lake to recover the body.’
On Tuesday, Tim DeSpain, a spokesperson for the Troopers, said: ‘The recording continued showing that the kayak overturned due to a strong current coming from the glacier.’
The force also added: ‘It also showed he was not wearing a life jacket ‘or appropriate protective clothing for glacial water sports.’
His family have been informed that he has been declared dead based on the footage retrieved from his helmet-fitted GoPro camera.
The search for the keen adventurer, who regularly shared pictures and videos of his kayaking and hiking trips, started on Sunday after the US Forest Service noticed a vehicle had been parked at the centre’s lot for five days.
It was later confirmed that the vehicle belonged to Mr Rodriguez and that an empty kayak had been towed to shore by a member of the public who then alerted the authorities.
Investigators said a dry bag was attached to kayak but there was nothing inside to identify the owner.
The footage of Mr Rodriguez drowning will not be publicly released and the search for his body is continuing.
