Man, 35, dies after ‘large branch’ falls from tree and hits him on public footpath

A man has been killed by a large branch falling from a tree.

The 35-year-old man died after being hit by the branch in Wilmslow, Cheshire, authorities have said.

The unnamed victim was struck while walking on a public footpath in the town at around 2.15pm on Sunday.

Emergency services rushed to the scene but tragically the man, who has yet to be formally identified, was pronounced dead.

Police have confirmed that the man’s loved ones have been informed of the tragedy.

An investigation has been launched into his death after Cheshire Police also informed the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and the Public Rights of Way department.

In a statement, a spokesperson for the force said: ‘At around 2.15pm on Sunday 10 July, police were called to reports that a man had been hit by a large branch that had fallen from a tree on a public footpath between Styal Road and Kings Road.

‘Officers attended the scene and sadly the man, a 35-year-old local man, was pronounced dead at the scene. His next of kin are aware.

‘Enquiries in relation to the incident are ongoing and both the Public Rights of Way department and Health and Safety Executive have been informed.’
