Prince Andrew will once again not attend the annual Order of the Garter procession at Windsor Castle.
The Order of the Garter, established in 1348 by King Edward III, is the oldest and most senior order of chivalry in Britain. Many members of the royal family are members—including King Charles, Princess Anne, and Prince William.
Prince Andrew has been a Knight of the Garter since 2006, and for his brother King Charles’s coronation, he wore his formal Garter robes. He last attended the Garter Day service in 2019.
The event was canceled in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic, and in 2022, Prince Andrew was not included in the public-facing procession, though he did attend the investiture and the lunch.
This year, he will also not take part in the production. Sources told the Daily Express that last year’s ban from the Garter procession “set a precedent for Andrew’s part in the Garter Day procession, and he will continue to be denied a public-facing role on the day.”
The Express also reported that “Andrew had hoped that he would be allowed to form part of this year’s procession – having been booted from the event at the last-minute last year – but the Palace appears to have doubled down on its approach to limit the disgraced Duke’s public appearances.”
