Two cops could face charges after one-legged man, 93, who was tasered in his wheelchair died

Two police officers could face manslaughter charges over the death of a 93-year-old dementia sufferer who was tasered in his wheelchair.

Police were called to a care home last June after reports an elderly man was threatening staff with a knife.

Two officers found one-legged Donald Burgess in his room holding a knife.

One officer pepper-sprayed him and hit him with a baton. When he failed to drop the knife a second officer tasered him.

But on arrival at the police station he was taken to hospital where he died three weeks later, on July 13.

Sussex Police referred itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct following the incident at Park Beck care home in St Leonards-on-Sea, East Sussex.

Both police officers were handed gross misconduct orders and are on restricted duties.

The IOPC said: ‘The CPS will consider whether any officers should be charged.’
